Appalachian Farmstead - Breeding Stock Brood Jennets

Farmstead's Hattie Hasseltine
2016 Frosted Spotted White Jennet

Farmstead's Hattie Hasseltine

A very unusual color is what one thinks when they see Farmstead's Hattie Hasseltine. Hattie is a frosted spotted white 2016 jennet by our four-time ACOSA National Champion herd sire, WLDF Tin Roof Sunday, and out of our NMDA Reserve National Champion Jennet and multiple champion producer, Country Music's Eli Barsi. Hattie developed a nice show record during her show career, and she is now continuing her story as a superb brood jennet with the birth in 2021 of her first foal, Farmstead's Dixie Lee, who is already winning in the show arena, including standing as NMDA National Champion Two Year Old Jennet in 2024. Hattie's 2024 jack foal, Farmstead's Ray Hicks, looks to be a champion in the making and holds great promise for the show ring in 2025. Hattie is bred to our red herd sire, Country Music's Rusty Weir, for a 2025 full brother or sister to Dixie Lee and Ray Hicks.

Farmstead's Mo Jefferson
2019 Dark Brown NLP Jennet

Mo was born at Appalachian Farmstead in August, 2019, and was sold as a yearling to a young family as a companion for another jennet that they had at the time. After maturing and having two foals for that family, they decided that their donkeys couldn't be accommodated in their immediate future plans, so I happily accepted Mo back at our farm into our group of brood jennets. Mo is by our Senior Herd Sire, four-time ACOSA National Champion Jack, WLDF Tin Roof Sunday, and out of a wonderful jennet which we raised, Farmstead's Matilda Faye. Mo is in foal to a very nice dark brown NLP jack named Dee's Little Vinnie, and we are hoping for a beautiful foal from Mo in February or March, 2026.

2019 Black Jennet

Dee's Shez Pretty Foxy

Foxy became available to us when her then owner approached us about acquiring Farmstead's Mo Jefferson from them. We jumped at the chance to own Foxy, as we had been unsuccessfully looking for a nice black jennet to breed to our Junior Herd Sire, Farmstead's Uncle Perley, 2024 NMDA Junior National Champion and ACOSA National Champion Jack. Foxy is 29 1/2 inches tall, and we look forward to a nice future foal in 2026 from this combination--perhaps a spot!

Farmstead's Ruby Iris
2020 Dark Red Jennet

Iris was bred to be the beauty that she is, with a mother who was an outstanding show jennet, as well as a proven producer of champion foals. Iris's mother was the phenomenal jennet, Frontier Legends Ruby Stone, who had numerous National Championships in the show arena and produced two National Champions herself-Frontier Legends Cinna and Farmstead's Popcorn Sutton. Iris's father is multi-halter champion Country Music's Rusty Weir, who stood as NMDA Reserve National Champion Jack as an 11-year old! Iris has already shown her show potential, winning NMDA National Champion Yearling Jennet in 2021, as well as Reserve Junior Champion at the 2022 Music City Show. Iris will be one of Appalachian Farmstead's brood Jennets in the future as she completes her show career.

Farmstead's Dixie Lee
2021 Dark Red Jennet

Farmstead's Dixie Lee

Dixie Lee is an August, 2021 dark red jennet who looked like top show material the day that she was born. She is the first foal from our frosted spotted white jennet, Farmstead's Hattie Hasseltine, and her sire is our sorrel jack, Country Music's Rusty Weir. Dixie Lee did very well at her only two shows in 2022, and she is expected to continue to do well in the show arena until the time that she joins our select brood jennet band in the future.

2024 Update: Dixie Lee just placed first in a very large Two-Year Old Jennet class at the NMDA National Show at Ozark Empire Fair!

Feather Ridge's CinnaBun
2022 Dark Red Jennet

In 2023, we began a search for another future brood jennet prospect to join our small, select group of jennets. We ultimately found her - a beautiful yearling dark red jennet with superb conformation and pedigree named Feather Ridge's CinnaBun. We will begin showing CinnaBun in 2024 and continue to do so for the next few years. She is destined for greatness in the show arena and as a brood jennet.

Frontier Legends Cinna (Retired)
2013 Red Jennet

Frontier Legend's Cinna 2013 Jennet

Frontier Legend's Cinna has proven to be a true legend in the show arena. Cinna has a sterling show record and has won more NMDA/ADMS National Championships than any donkey has ever won. She is as close to the breed standard for Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys as you can get. Out of 18 shows in which Cinna was shown from 2016 until 2024, she placed first in her class in 14 of those shows, and placed second in the other four shows. Out of these 18 shows, she was Grand Champion Jennet 11 times, Reserve Champion Jennet 4 times, and Best of Breed 7 times. Her National Championships include the following: 2016 NMDA National Champion Jennet/Best of Breed, 2017 NMDA Reserve National Champion Jennet, 2019 ADMS National Champion Donkey, 2022 NMDA National Champion Jennet/Best of Breed, and 2024 National Champion Jennet. Cinna foaled one beautiful red micro jack for us in 2021, Farmstead's Cotton Top Mounts, who is being successfully shown by his current owner in Middle Tennessee. Unfortunately, following that birth, Cinna has been unable to produce any future foals-a real blow to our breeding program and to the miniature donkey world in general. Cinna will continue to be shown while she still has the potential to win the large shows.

Country Music's Eli Barsi (Retired)
2005 Dark Brown Jennet

Country Music's Eli Barsi is a beautiful 2005 dark brown jennet with light points and is the matron of the jennet herd at Appalachian Farmstead. She is by Country Music's Garth Brooks and out of Capstone Shadow Dancer. Eli was purchased from Country Music's Miniature Donkeys as a weanling and has an outstanding show record, as well as an outstanding record producing foals that have done very well in the show arena.

Eli has won many NMDA championships over the years, including standing Grand Champion Jennet at the Tennessee State Fair and NMDA Reserve National Champion Jennet at Shelbyville, Tennessee. This latter recognition was especially notable, as she won the Five Years and Older Jennets class and Reserve Champion Jennet after producing three foals. All of Eli's nine foals have done extremely well in the show arena, winning many NMDA halter and performance championships over the years. Eli has been permanently retired from the show arena and is continuing to produce winning foals for Appalachian Farmstead.

Farmstead's Lily May Ledford (Retired)
2011 Brown Jennet

Farmstead's Lily May Ledford 2011 Jennet

Farmstead's Lily May Ledford is a very cute 26.5 inch brown jennet who has captured the hearts of young and old alike! Lily was shown in four shows as a yearling, and she placed first in two shows and second in two shows. We have had numerous offers both in the United States and from other countries to purchase Lily; however, we felt that her small size could be problematic if she were to be bred to the wrong jack.

We also always take Lily to community events whenever a donkey is requested, and she is always the center of attention at these events. She loves children and will follow them around like a puppy dog, and her size is just right for small children. For these reasons, Lily will be a part of the Appalachian Farmstead family for years to come!

Lily is expecting her first foal in May, 2025, by Farmstead's Cotton Top Mounts, our 28" red jack now owned by the Ames family in War Trace, TN. This will be a much anticipated, very tiny addition to our donkey herd!

Frontier Legends Ruby Stone (Reference Only)

Appalachian Farmstead was fortunate to purchase Frontier Legends Ruby Stone towards the end of 2017. She produced two beautiful foals for us before her untimely death in 2021. Ruby was a well-known halter champion, having been named both NMDA and ADMS National Champion Jennet, as well as multiple other championships over a show career spanning the years 2006-2009. Ruby was a beautiful 2005 sorrel jennet by Short ASSets Starfire and out of Frontier Legends Lizzie Johnson Williams.

Frontier Legends Cinna, Ruby's 2013 foal, has continued her mother's winning ways by achieving 2016 NMDA National Champion Jennet/Best of Breed, 2017 NMDA Reserve National Champion Jennet, 2019 ADMS National Champion Donkey, 2022 NMDA National Champion Jennet/Best of Breed, and 2024 NMDA National Champion Jennet. Ruby's 2017 jack foal, jack foal, Frontier Legends Kid Curry, was named the Grand Champion Jack at the 2018 Fort Worth Livestock Show. Ruby's 2018 foal named Farmstead's Popcorn Sutton and sired by our sorrel jack, Country Music's Rusty Weir, was named ADMS Reserve Champion Donkey at 9 months of age, as well as being named Junior Champion Donkey for the two shows at which he has been shown! Her last foal born to our farm in 2020 is Farmstead's Ruby Iris, who is also sired by Country Music's Rusty Weir and has been named the NMDA 2021 National Champion Yearling Jennet, as well as Reserve Junior Champion at the Music City Show in 2022!

Appalachian Farmstead is fortunate to own two superb jennet foals produced by Ruby Stone that will continue to pass Ruby's outstanding genetics to future foals!
